Brian Patten, Kevin Bailey and Gary Bilis adjudicated the second Poetry on the Lake competition Hortus Conclusus: gardens and other enclosures.
Thè winning and commended poems are printed here, together with a selection of poems chosen by Poetry on the Lake. An additional prize, the Bill Winter Award, has been instituted in memory of William Winter, History Master at Eton and much-loved personality on the island.
The competition attracted 300 entries from as far afield as India, Pakistan and Australia. Thè theme Hortus Conclusus (thè blazon of the antique town of Orta San Giulio) was popular with poets, who, if not keen gardeners themselves, certainly enjoy sitting, wandering and composing in gardens.
As we hoped, this theme was also interpreted more widely by some, who sent poems inspired by the symbolism of the enclosed garden.
